ONLINE WORKSHOP: Painting from Collage Studies

ONLINE WORKSHOP: Painting from Collage Studies

This is an online workshop held via Zoom with Case for Making

Tomie Ohtake (1913 - 2005) was a Japanese Brazilian artist who was very interested in abstraction and ways to unsee images in her paintings. She became an important part of the geometric abstraction movement in Brazil and her work was full of color and organic shapes. In the 1960s, she experimented with creating small collage studies of ripped paper and then making a painting from these collages. In the 1970s, she started cutting her collage papers with scissors and moving to brighter, more saturated colors.

In this workshop, we will learn more about Tomie Ohtake’s work and create a series of small collage studies using magazines, catalogs, and printed images. We’ll experiment with translating one of our collages into a watercolor, letting the shapes and colors in our collage inform our painting. Register here >>

WORKSHOP: Diebenkorn inspired collages

Join me at Case for Making for a workshop exploring painted paper and collage.

Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) was born in San Francisco and his art practice was forever inspired by San Francisco’s unique geography and colors. He’s known for his flattened and stacked color landscapes and cityscapes. Diebenkorn worked out a lot of his ideas for paintings through collage. Using his paintings and collages as inspiration, we’ll make our own abstracted landscape collages. We’ll cut and curate our colors from a range of collage materials and think about color order and composition in our collages.

WORKSHOP: Color & Shape

Register with mighty mighty studio here

With her beautiful use of color and shapes, Ukrainian / French artist, Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979), created paintings, collages, fabric designs, and theatre designs that sought to capture the magic of light. In this collage workshop, we will play with paper in bold colors, using strong contrasts, and a wide range of geometric shapes to create collages that feel energetic and bright. Open to all levels, this workshop is a great opportunity to “self-recycle” by bringing in your old artwork practice pages or other papers you have at home to transform through collage.

ONLINE WORKSHOP: Place Memory inspired by Howardena Pindell

This is an online workshop held via Zoom with Case for Making

Howardena Pindell is an American artist known for her densely textured mixed media paintings as well as her groundbreaking video work, “Free, White and 21.” Howardena’s work pushes at the boundaries of what paintings are supposed to be through abstraction and with a huge range of materials. In 1979, Howardena was in a terrible car accident and lost a lot of her memories. She started her Autobiography series using postcards of places she’d traveled to (but could no longer remember), cutting these apart and filling in the gaps with paint. In this workshop, we will learn more about Howardena’s decades long art career and use her Autobiography series as a jumping off point for our own explorations of collage and paint. By cutting apart and painting the spaces in between an image, we will get to really play with color and mimicking shapes with paint. Register here >>

ONLINE WORKSHOP: Landscapes in Collage + Paint

This is an online workshop held via Zoom with Case for Making

Before we get started, we’ll look at the work on two contemporary British artists - John Piper and David Tress - who use collage materials as blocks of color and texture in their landscape work. We’ll then get started with a wonderfully fun and quick collage process using torn scrap paper. We’ll make several quick collages thinking more about texture and line than about color. Once we’ve built up a base layer of collage, we’ll paint on top of the paper with watercolor and ink, using both brushes and unconventional tools to make a variety of marks. Our finished pieces will be full of texture and depth. Register here >>

IN PERSON WORKSHOP: Composition Studies in Collage

Sign up with Mighty Mighty Studio

Collage is a great medium to explore principles of composition because the papers can be endlessly rearranged, reworked, recombined, cut up, and moved around. We will look at ways to divide and organize your papers, how shapes and scale change the movement and focus of the collage, and how we can use rhythm, repetition, and line to create a well balanced collage. In this workshop, you might work on one collage that combines several compositional ideas, or create several collage studies.
