This online collage making and art history class is one of my favorites to teach. Each week we will learn about an artist’s life and work and then make a collage inspired by their colors, ways of working, ideas, or techniques. We will be learning from each other and from other artists that have come before us. Students will learn a large range of new techniques in collage and mixed media. Open to all levels.

The goal of this course is to provide students an opportunity to explore a variety of mixed media methods using a wide range of techniques. Each class will be a stand alone project and a chance to delve into a medium that is perhaps new or unexplored. Students will be encouraged to take a medium farther into personal projects and further exploration. You will leave this class with a new set of tools for working with wet and dry materials, printmaking, painting, collage, writing, and others. Each class in this series will start with a fun and easy drawing, doodling, or mark making activity. The goal will be to make a series of interesting and unique papers for use in collages. We will primarily be working abstractly but students are welcome to take their papers full of expressive marks and turn them into landscapes, figures, or representational pieces. We will use our freshly marked papers to make collages and mixed media pieces. Each class will include examples, demonstrations, and time to share with the group.

We will talk about signature styles, forms, and colors that might unify your pieces. Ideal for students with some art making experience already who are looking for ways to keep growing and developing their artistic style and build strong art making habits. Over the course of 12 weeks, students will work with two artists, Erin McCluskey Wheeler and Laurel Shear, to build skills and techniques working with paper and paint. With collage as a starting point, you will learn new ways to approach abstraction and composition, gain new insight into color relationships, and build good art making habits to sustain your creative energy. Classes will be taught alternatively by each instructor allowing students to learn from two different artists, both highly skilled at mixed media work. Each class will feature critique and feedback, demonstrations, and introductions to other artists' work through slides and images. Students will have access to their own private art sharing platform to post and share work. Open to students at all levels of experience who are looking for a creative community and lots of ideas to make art.

Laurel and Erin will also send each registered student a pack of collage papers assembled from their studios - each paper pack will be unique and may be used for class projects or to spark other projects.

Classes meet on Zoom from Saturday mornings from 10 am - noon (Pacific time), April 3 - June 19. Classes will be recorded and can be available for students who need to miss a class.

This is the fun color theory class you always wished you could take. We will make collages in triadic colors, complementary colors, single colors, split complementary colors, and more. We will also talk about ways to work in collage and mixed media including cutting, composition, and gluing. In this class you will generate new ideas for creating abstract art and think deeply about color through the fun, accessible medium of collage. Open to artists of all levels of experience.

Each week in this online class will have a different focus—figurative collage, landscapes, assemblage,, abstract collage, color, composition, and many more. Erin will begin each class with an inspirational slideshow featuring work by a wide range of historical and contemporary artists. We'll make work together, share and talk about art, and have fun exploring the very accessible and dynamic world of collage.
