The Surface of the Moon series
The Surface of the Moon series
Each painting in this series started as a failed collage. I ripped off the layers and painted over the remaining papers and edges, finding new forms and shapes. Soon, these moons and planets emerged. I started reading about the moon and its surface, lunar deformation and planetary geology. The surface of the moon that we see reflecting light back to earth is made up of so many geological deformations and past events; it is in fact a scarred surface. The surface of the moon is a record of water, fire, tectonic shifts, collisions, meteorites, and the pull of the Earth. The moon has undergone a lot and is still here with us; its presence in the sky is a touchpoint to our days and nights. The moon is a possibility.
Each painting is 18 × 24 × 1.5 and framed in poplar float frames with a signature and hanging wire on the back
The title of each of these four paintings follows the same structure: “The Surface of the Moon is a record of… (fire / water / tectonic shifts / pressure)”
